Jane Austen was an English novelist who lived most of her life in Hampshire. She published four novels during her lifetime, anonymously or under the label “By a Lady”: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion appeared just after her death in 1817.
Her subject is the daily life of the English gentry, and her method is irony: she shows how money, inheritance and reputation press on people who would rather talk about feelings.
